Joseph Kerekes Goes to His New Home...

SCI Huntingdon

Convicted murderer Joseph Kerekes will now be spending the rest of his natural life at SCI Huntingdon.

SCI Huntingdon (Huntingdon County), opened in 1889, was modeled after the Elmira Reformatory in New York. Originally the Huntingdon Reformatory for Young Offenders, it was later used for "defective delinquents" until 1960. It was a maximum-security prison for men and housed capital case inmates until 1995. Today, SCI Huntingdon is a close-security institution.

So what is "close-security"?

Well according to Wikipedia: Under close security, prisoners usually have one or two person cells operated from a remote control station. Each cell has its own toilet and sink. Inmates may leave their cells for work assignments or correctional programs and otherwise may be allowed in a common area in the cellblock or an exercise yard. The fences are generally double fences with watchtowers, housing armed guards, plus often a third, lethal-current electric fence in the middle.

  2. . . .it was later used for "defective delinquents". . .

Now it's used for "defective" adults. Sounds like the right place for Joe.

Finally got Google Earth installed, thanks Ken. Going to take a more complete "tour" later, but God does that look bleak. Good luck Joe.

  3. What exactly IS a "defective delinquent"?

Is that the criminal version of the Keystone Cops? Or maybe a kid with three arms?

    Pizza,

I think we need to put a warning label on your posts... I almost spit my drink out when I read that one. :)

  5. When you have a complete mailing address for Harlow and Joe, including inmate numbers, I sure would appreciate it. I have already bought them both a "WELCOME TO YOUR NEW HOME" card.

  7. It's a bummer that they might have been making friends and just getting settled in at the old place, and now have to move.

Uprooting people like that is hard on them!

    LOL!

Seriously, though, life is always what you make of it and even in prison I think it's possible to have a meaningful existence. Some prisoners -- even murderers -- do that.

If he works at becoming a model prisoner, he could possibly be transferred to a more comfortable facility sometime down the road -- and it will be a long road.

  9. I just looked at Joe's new address. Place is a darn fortress. I realize it was built on the Elmira model, but.....

It does not look like it can carry that many prisoners, maybe 500 max since it looks like only two wings of cells.

Well, as it is said, you do the crime, you do the time. I guess Joe can only request his next roommate to be his former lover, as long as Harlow is not allowed anything sharp.
